You may believe that the first day a new hire starts the job is when they sit at their desk for the first time. I would argue that the job starts for them as soon as you offer them the job. Here are a few ways to put your best foot forward when on-boarding a new employee. First Impressions Are Important: Make sure the team is prepared for the new employee from the second they walk in the door. I am not saying you need to roll out the red carpet and clap them in. Make sure everyone is on the same page. Tell the receptionist, clean their desk, ask someone to be a mentor. No one wants to sit in a lobby for thirty minutes because the front desk has never heard of this person and they do not know where to send them. Secondly, arriving at a desk that has everyone’s old reports and coffee mugs on it sends a message that they do not matter enough to receive a fresh work space. Have someone walk them around for a couple of days, show them where the bathrooms are and introduce them to their new team members.
Send the Paperwork ahead of Time: No one wants to spend their first exciting day at the office reading and filling out a 100 page employee handbook and signing tax forms. If possible, send the documents a week before and ask them to sign them electronically. Have a plan in motion: On the first or second day make sure you present the new hire a clear plan of what they will be doing for the next couple of weeks. Make sure they are aware of all of the meetings they have coming up and what projects you are currently working on. It helps when they have an idea of the day rather than them feeling like they are chasing behind their boss/mentor like a child. Make sure they are part of the team: If your team has a uniform, make sure to ask for their size and have the clothing ready the day they start. Make sure to give them some branded and useful items. A great way to present this would be in a cute basket with company swag and gift cards, or their favorite snacks. This will help them feel like they are cared about and part of the team.
